It was widely expected that Google would be releasing Android 4.3 and re-designed Gmail app for Android at the recently concluded I/O. After all, for how long will Google let iOS users enjoy a much more beautiful and aesthetically pleasing Gmail app compared to Android users? As we all know things did not go as expected, and Google did not announce a new version of Android, or an update to the Gmail app. Instead, it announced a Galaxy S4 ‘Nexus’ edition, taking everyone by surprise.
Google did give us a sneak peek into the new Gmail app for Android in one of the slides at I/O, but it did not provide much information. Now, the folks over at The Next Web have managed to get their hands on some screenshots for the new Gmail app for Android, and for the web version as well.
The screenshots for the Android app reveal a new sidebar, which is soon becoming a common place in all beautifully designed Android apps. It also shows the Smart Labels feature, which seems to have graduated from Labs to become a standard feature. The screenshot of the web version does not reveal much information, except that emails will be sorted in tabs, according to their smart labels.
With Android 4.3 already caught running on a Nexus 4 in Thailand, the announcement for the re-designed Gmail app for Android and web and the next version of Android looks imminent.
