Huawei has been making some excellent phones including the likes of the Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, P20 Pro, and Nova series. While these phones are not without their own issues, one common complaint that most Huawei and Honor owner devices have is that they don’t receive push notifications from their installed apps.
The reason behind most users not receiving push notifications from background apps on their Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20, P20 Pro etc is due to the aggressive power management from Huawei’s Emotion UI. In a bid to extend the battery life of its devices by as much as possible, Huawei has gone a bit too far with Emotion UI’s power management.
By default, Emotion UI puts all installed apps in a deep sleep mode and prevents them from launching in the background which negatively affects their functionality. This leads to push notifications from most installed apps not working properly. Huawei does maintain a whitelist of apps which includes some popular apps like Gmail, Google, Google Maps etc. This ensures that their functionality is not affected in any way and that users continue to receive notifications from them in a timely manner. However, for all other apps, Emotion UI prevents them from launching in the background thereby preventing them from sending push notifications.
If you are frustrated with the lack of push notifications from installed apps on your Huawei phone, worry not. There’s a solution to this problem. Just follow the steps below.
Step 1: On your Huawei Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, P20, or any other Huawei phone, head over to Settings -> Battery -> App launch.
Step 2: Disable the Manage all automatically option. This will ensure that Emotion UI does not prevent apps from running in the background and that they are able to send push notifications properly. However, Emotion UI will still prevent some apps from running in the background.
Step 3: Tap the 3-dot overflow menu button on the top-right corner, select Manage manually and then enable the Auto launch, Secondary launch, Run in background options for all the apps from which you want to receive push notifications.
Do note that the battery life of your Huawei phone will take a slight hit due to this change. However, the impact should not be that big and you will at least start receiving push notifications from all the installed apps on your device.
Some apps still might not work properly even after you disable App launch. Getting them to work properly and send push notifications requires a more aggressive approach which involves disabling App launch completely using ADB. However, that has the unintended side effect of this is that you will no longer be able to access the battery usage menu on your Huawei phone.
