The Galaxy Gear has been a half-hearted attempt from Samsung at the smart watch market. The Gear works only on selected Galaxy devices from Samsung, and can only display notifications from certain apps.

Samsung has been working on increasing the compatibility of Gear with its Galaxy series of handsets with software updates. While initially the smart watch only worked with the Galaxy Note 3, it is now compatible with the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S3 as well.

Regarding the limited notification issue, the company has released an update for the Galaxy Gear companion app on the Samsung App Store that brings compatibility with just about every app on the Play Store.

There is also a companion OTA update for Gear rolling out, which will also prepare the smart watch for this new functionality. This OTA update is a must before the smart watch can display notifications from all the suite of applications installed on your Galaxy handset.
