Samsung today announced two new tablets under the Galaxy Tab S moniker with an 8.4 and 10.5-inch display, respectively. Both tablets are the company’s thinnest and lightest tablet to date with a waistline of only 6.5 and 6.6mm with a weight of 294g and 465g, respectively.
The tablets also make use of Samsung’s own Super AMOLED display to deliver a wider range of colors with better accuracy, 90% of Adobe RGB coverage and color reproduction. The WQXGA (25600×1600) resolution means that the displays are as pixel packed as the iPad, if not more.
Just like on the Galaxy S5 and other AMOLED toting devices, Samsung has included various display modes on the Tab S like Adaptive Display, AMOLED Cinema and AMOLED Photo, which changes the gamma, saturation and sharpness based on the on-screen content.
Other specs of the tablets include an Exynos 5 Octa processor rocking four Cortex-A15 cores clocked at 1.9GHz and four Cortex-A7 cores clocked at 1.3GHz, 3GB of RAM, 16/32GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, an 8MP rear shooter with LED flash and 2.1MP front-facing camera. Connectivity features and sensors include Wi-Fi b/g/n/ac with MIMO, IR blaster, Accelerometer, Hall sensor, RGB sensor and more.
The LTE variant of the tablets will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.3GHZ. The 8.5-inch Tab S will come with a 4,900mAh battery while the 10.5-inch variant will come with a massive 7,900mAh one.
On the software sides, the tablets will be running on Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI running on top of it. They will feature all the gimmicks that Samsung has included on the Galaxy S5 including S-Console, Kids Mode, Private mode, S-Translator, Group Mode, Ultra Power Saving mode, Multi Window and more. The company has also included a Multi User Mode that will “enable users to create their own personal optimized profile.”
Users will also be entitled to 50GB of free storage space on Box for 6 months, 50GB of free storage space on Dropbox, 6 months trial subscription of the WSJ, Economic Times, Marvel Unlimited and the New York Times.
Both tablets will be available for sale in selected markets in July at an unknown price. In the United States, AT&T will be among the first carriers to offer the Tab S to consumers sometime in the future.
