Sony today announced the addition of the Xperia Z1, Z2 and the M2 to its AOSP for Xperia project.

Besides support for three new devices, the company has also updated the AOSP build for Xperia Z to the very latest version of Android (4.4.4), and released a unified kernel source for all its devices based on the MSM8974 platform.

This includes the Xperia Z1, Z2, Z1 Compact, Z2, Z3, Z3 Compact and the Z3 Tablet. A unified kernel source will make it easy for custom ROM developers who develop kernels for these three devices.

Under its Xperia for AOSP project, Sony provides a near stock build of Android for the supported devices. While these builds cannot be used a daily driver because of the lack of certain important functionalities likemobile radio and camera, they do help the ROM community in getting AOSP based ROMs to work without any major issues on these devices.
